Hydroflux to Provide Australia’s Largest MBR Secondary Screening Facility
June 9, 2026
The Lower Molonglo Water Quality Control Centre (LMWQCC) located near Canberra is the largest inland wastewater treatment facility in Australia, servicing a population of approximately 570,000 or treating up to 100 million litres per day (100 MLD).
With an increasing population in Canberra, the LMWQCC is undergoing an upgrade to provide increased capacity to meet future demand of approximately 140 MLD.

Hydroflux was awarded the design, supply and commissioning of the MBR secondary screening facility, the largest of its type in Australia.
“We recently commissioned a new secondary screening facility for a Sydney Water plant, operating at a peak flow of 1500 L/s. And this was tested during some extreme wet weather last year without any operational issues. With three further similar systems on the way for Sydney Water, and now for Lower Molonglo, our technology and expertise in this application is critical to the liquid steam as it provides protection to the downstream submerged membranes.
Our history on MBR secondary screening goes back to 2007, where I commissioned Australia’s first major MBR screening facility. We are now also providing technology to several MBR based plants in New Zealand” says John Koumoukelis, CEO of Hydroflux.
The HUBER RPPS and LIQUID Drum Screens have been used as primary and secondary screens across numerous wastewater treatment plants in Australia and New Zealand. MBR secondary screening is crucial in defending the downstream membrane bioreactor process against accumulation of rags and screenings, that would otherwise impact performance and lead to costly maintenance.
