Hydroflux Completes a 7.2MLD Membrane Bioreactor Upgrade for Ballina WWTP
June 17, 2025
Hydroflux recently completed the upgrade of the Ballina WWTP to increase the plant’s MBR filtration capacity from 5.4 to 7.2 ML/day ADWF, deliver a new UV disinfection system, provide new process instrumentation, SCADA modifications and required site construction alterations. The upgrade will provide a higher level of treatment in addition to increased membrane filtration capacity.

Thirty-six new ultra-filtration flat sheet membrane modules manufactured by Toray-MMBR were retrofitted to the MBR filtration zones. The retrofit modules were designed for easy integration within the site constraints and existing process pipework. A new UV disinfection system was also installed to increase the level of virus and bacteria removal. Two new 80 L/s in pipe UV systems were installed.
Project Highlights
- Increased capacity of the membrane bioreactor trains
- Enhanced performance due to new ultra-filtration membrane modules replacing existing micro-filtration modules
- New inline UV technology with increased performance for virus inactivation

Technology Highlights
- New Toray-MMBR Membrane Modules provide increased surface area per module compared to the existing units, allowing increased capacity in the same footprint
- The modules were designed to be easily retrofitted with minimal site modifications, using existing base frames, scouring blowers, permeate and aeration headers
- UF based filtration provides higher quality effluent over the decommissioned MF type units originally installed
