Wastewater Treatment Upgrade at Tasman Tanning, Whanganui

Tasman Tanning, a leading New Zealand leather processor, needed to upgrade its wastewater treatment to meet stricter discharge standards. The tannery wastewater contained high solids and chromium, requiring a reliable and resilient system.

Hydroflux designed a treatment system centred on a HyDAF HD-75S DAF unit and SAT-450 saturated air tank built for seismic compliance. Supporting equipment included:

  • Reaction tanks for chemical conditioning
  • HydraBLEND® polymer dosing system
  • HUBER Q620 screw press for sludge dewatering

The system was customised to Tasman Tanning’s process, with Hydroflux engineers integrating the HyDAF and downstream sludge handling equipment to reduce the load on municipal infrastructure while ensuring compliance.

The Results

  • 100 tons of wet sludge reduced to 10 tons of dewatered sludge daily
  • Over 3 tons of dry solids diverted daily from the municipal sewer system
  • Improved on-site waste handling and compliance with discharge standards
  • Reliable performance under demanding wastewater conditions

Sustainability in Action

The HyDAF provides a sustainable, long-term solution, supporting Tasman Tanning’s environmental and compliance objectives while reducing strain on local infrastructure.
