Hydroflux Upgrades Sludge Processing Facility at Thabeban WWTP

August 19, 2025

Thabeban WWTP located in Bundaberg Qld processes approximately 2 ML/d of sewage with the final effluent being recycled via a distribution network to nearby agricultural areas.

Hydroflux was recently awarded the upgrade of the site’s sludge dewatering facility. The work included design, project management, electrical controls with SCADA, site construction works, commissioning and training.

An existing belt filter press was replaced with a HUBER QPRESS®, which has been well proven in over 80 treatment plants across Australia and New Zealand. A new polymer dosing system, sludge conveying and control system was also provided as part of a fully integrated design build package.

Project Highlights

  • HUBER QPRESS® technology replaced existing belt filter press
  • Increased dewatering performance will lead to approximately 25% reduction in disposal costs
  • Less washwater demand will result in a 50% reduction in energy usage
  • Sludge type is aerobically stabilised waste activated sludge produced from an oxidation ditch process – over 21%DS was achieved
  • Hydroflux carried out the site mechanical and electrical works providing a fully integrated system with process, mechanical and electrical design
  • Performance guarantees met

Technology Highlights

  • Higher cake solids, reducing sludge cake transport and disposal costs
  • High capture without the need for secondary filtration on the filtrate
  • Low speed technology, reducing energy demand and maintenance requirements
  • Fully enclosed with inspection hatches
  • QPRESS® is certified by Climate Active as carbon neutral
  • All stainless steel fabrication, including the main case
  • Proven in over 80 installations across Australia, New Zealand and Pacific
