Managing Algae Removal from Water Reuse Schemes
June 3, 2025
Water reuse schemes have been implemented across Australia over the last two decades, reducing our reliance on potable water use.
Many of these recycling schemes use treated effluent that is stored in a lagoon prior to reuse or further processing in an advanced filtration step, such as multi-media or membrane filtration. Algae growth in these upstream ponds can cause a number of issues on the downstream process or irrigation system.

Hydroflux has completed numerous algae removal systems for municipal and industrial effluents across Australia. Central to the process is our HyDAF Dissolved Air Flotation technology.
Algae – Problems
- Reduces the performance of tertiary filtration systems
- Increased backwash volumes downstream; reduced water recovery
- Seasonal variations leads to inconsistent water quality
- Influence on alkalinity and pH
HyDAF Dissolved Air Flotation – The Solution
- Removes algae, phosphorous and suspended solids
- Protects the downstream process, increasing recovery, reducing backwash intervals and any associated chemical cleans
- Simple principle of operation; automatic unattended operation
- Robust construction, fully fabricated from stainless steel
- Well proven in water and wastewater applications across Australia and New Zealand
- Standard sizes from 5 through to 300 kL per hour

Applications
- Sewage treatment pond effluent
- Tertiary treatment in recycled water schemes
- Raw water treatment for potable water treatment plants
- Industrial water reuse schemes
- Industrial effluent treatment
