New Inlet Works Technology for Kawakawa WWTP in Northland

May 29, 2025

Kawakawa is located in the Northland region of New Zealand. The Kawakawa wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) treats wastewater from the Kawakawa township, including the Bay of Islands College and hospital. There are approximately 550 connections to this site.

Wastewater is treated in a biological process with the final treated effluent undergoing filtration prior to UV disinfection. The final treated effluent is then discharged to a constructed wetland.

A new SSF2000 Step Screen® was installed as part of the recent upgrade works. The new screen will remove gross solids from the wastewater stream to enable the downstream process to be free of accumulated debris and screenings, which would otherwise reduce performance of the treatment system.

Technology Overview

  • SSF Step Screen® with 3mm bar spacing
  • All 316L construction
  • Low angle step design
  • Stainless steel link system provides reliable operation (no chains or sprockets)
  • No bottom or blind step
  • Proven throughout New Zealand

Step Screen® was invented by HUBER’s subsidiary in Sweden back in the early 1980’s and since then over 6000 units have been installed around the world. Step Screen® provides an efficient solution to screening, particularly when a good level of screening efficiency is required without the need for washwater to clean the screening elements.
